Cammino di Oropa Orientale
The Cammino di Oropa Orientale is the most technical and challenging of the routes leading to Oropa. It is more like a trekking route than a walk.
It can be traveled in the two directions: starting from Valle Mosso, crossing the Cervo Valley and finally arriving at the Sanctuary of Oropa, or it can be considered a continuation of the journey for those who arrive at Oropa after having traveled either the Cammino di OROPA DELLA SERRA or the Cammino di OROPA CANAVESANO.
It can be split into 3 STAGES by the more trained or those who travel it from Oropa in the direction of Valle Mosso, or into 4 short stages that “cushion” the more than 1,000-meter elevation gain that must be faced to get to Bocchetto Sessera by those who instead travel it in the direction of Oropa.

HISTORY
The Oropa Trail was conceived in 2012 by Alberto Conte, president of theAssociation Movimento Slow, who still personally supports and promotes it, collaborating with local associations, primarily the Association of Friends of Via Francigena in Santhià and with the Sanctuary of Oropa. In 2023, the new Eastern section of the Way was inaugurated.

ACCESSIBILITY
The pedestrian route of the Cammino di Oropa is unfortunately not accessible with wheelchairs, the ground is often uneven and partly on the path there are several sections with steep slopes that can reach 12% on asphalt ground.
ROAD BOTTOM.
70% dirt (mountain trails), 30% asphalt

STAGE 01
Vallemosso – Bocchetto Sessera: 13.5 km, 1,038 m elevation gain; This is a challenging climb from the town of Valle Mosso up through the woods of Oasi Zegna to reach the Sessera valley. A detour makes it possible to reach the Brughiera sanctuary, located in a beautiful panoramic position and in whose surroundings there are some reception facilities where we advise less trained wayfarers to stop. The marvelous view of Monte Rosa and the plains once you reach the ridge repays the effort.
STAGE 01 - VARIANT
Heath Sanctuary: 4,9 km, 288 m elevation gain; A 3 km deviation from the original route that leads through forests, paved roads and paths first on natural ground and then along a path equipped for people with motor disabilities, to the Sanctuary of the Heath.
STAGE 02
Bocchetto Sessera – San Giovanni d’Andorno Sanctuary: 11.8 km, 459m ascent; We leave the ridges of Oasi Zegna to reach the Cervo valley, among pastures, woods and small villages where time seems to have stopped. After the challenging elevation gain of the first STAGE, a much easier route is taken, descending to the valley floor before a short climb to reach the second shrine of the trip, that of San Giovanni d’Andorno, where it is possible to stay overnight.
STAGE 03
Sanctuary of St. John of Andorno – Sanctuary of Oropa. 7.7 km, 483 m elevation gain in ascent; The Cammino di DANTE Orientale concludes with a short STAGE linking the two sanctuaries of San Giovanni d’Andorno and Oropa, in the footsteps of one of the prominent figures of this area: senator Rosazza, who at the end of the 19th century built at his own expense a connecting road and tunnel that was very ambitious for the time. Along the climb we can admire the beautiful views of the Cervo valley, and once we come out in the Oropa valley the huge dome of the Upper Basilica stands out on the horizon. We will probably arrive soon, and have plenty of time to visit the shrine complex, Sacro Monte and the monumental cemetery.
