Umbria, the green heart of Italy, is a wonderful region for lovers of walking and slow tourism. This land rich in history, culture and spirituality lends itself perfectly to discovery through itineraries that wind through medieval villages, perched hamlets, hilly landscapes and places of spirit.

In fact, the region boasts a network of Cammino dell’Anima that allow people to explore its diverse souls: from Franciscan spirituality to Benedictine tradition, from nature trails to those that celebrate love and local history.
In this comprehensive list, we will explore some of Umbria’s most significant Camminos.

CAMMINO DI SAN BENEDETTO

Length: 300 km

The Cammino di San Benedetto is an itinerary, divided into 16 STAGES, that retraces the most significant places in the life of Europe’s patron saint.

The Cammino runs for 300 kilometers from Norcia, at the foot of the Sibillini Mountains, to Montecassino, crossing Umbria and Lazio, mainly in mountainous areas, offering walkers a deep immersion in nature, from the charms of the Sibillini Mountains to the evocative valleys of the Aniene and Liri rivers.

The route joins the three most important Benedictine places-Norcia, the saint’s birthplace; Subiaco, in Lazio, where he lived for more than 30 years, founding numerous monasteries; and Montecassino, also in Lazio, where he spent the last part of his life and wrote “the Rule,” a set of rules governing the life of the monastic community.

This itinerary, also touches on places linked to figures of great spiritual importance such as Rita of Cascia, Francis of Assisi and Thomas Aquinas.

CAMMINO DI SAN BENEDETTO

CAMMINO DI SAN VALENTINO

Length: 187 km
Stages: 10
Departure: Basilica of St. Valentine (Terni)
Arrival: Terni – Basilica of St. Valentine

The CAMMINO DI DANTE is a loop route that starts and finishes in Terni, winding 187 kilometers around the Conca Ternana.

This 10-stage itinerary takes in an authentic area still untouched by mass tourism.

The Cammino, in fact, allows you to immerse yourself in an area rich in natural beauty, such as the famous Marmore Falls, but also to discover picturesque villages and lesser-known sites.

Along the route, walkers will be able to appreciate the generous nature in which it is immersed, the picturesque villages that dot it, and its very rich historical-artistic and enogastronomic heritage.Named after St. Valentine, the patron saint of Terni and world-famous as the saint of love, the Cammino touches on all the places linked to the figure of the saint.
The choice of this name gives the route an identity value that is both universal and, at the same time, makes it symbolically the ideal Cammino for all lovers.

Cammino Francescano della Marca

Length: 167 km
Stages: 8
Departure: Assisi
Arrival: Ascoli Piceno

The CAMMINO FRANCESCANO DELLA MARCA is a 167-km itinerary that crosses Umbria and Marche, offering an extraordinary variety of landscapes and cultural treasures.

This Cammino touches four natural parks-Monte Subasio, Altolina, Colfiorito and the Monti Sibillini National Park-giving walkers a rich variety of environments: river sources, waterfalls, marshes, plateaus and forests, and stretches with views of the Adriatic Sea.

Starting in Assisi, an international spiritual center, the Cammino passes through places such as Spello, Foligno, and the Colfiorito plateau.
It then continues on the Marche side, touching on medieval villages such as Sarnano and ending in the “white city” of Ascoli Piceno.

Along the way, walkers can admire works of art and architecture ranging from pre-Romanesque to Baroque, immersing themselves in a thousand-year history marked by the presence of St. Francis.

The Cammino Francescano della Marca

Cammino dei Protomartiri Francescani

Length: 110 km
Stages: 6
Departure: Terni
Arrival: Terni

IL CAMMINO DEI PROTOMARTIRI FRANCESCANI is a 110-kilometer circular route that winds through the heart of Umbria, crossing the Terni valley. Divided into 6 STAGES, this itinerary links the places of St. Francis and the first Franciscan martyrs, among forests, hermitages, ancient parishes and imposing Roman ruins.

The path touches a series of charming villages and towns, including Terni, Narni, Stroncone, Calvi dell’Umbria and San Gemini. Along the way, walkers can retrace the paths that connect urban centers, caves, hermitages and convents dear to St. Francis and his friars.

This path is dedicated precisely to them, the Franciscan Protomartyrs, a group of preaching friars native to these lands who, inspired by Francis, went to Morocco to preach, encountering martyrdom.

The route allows anyone who walks it to discover the rich Franciscan history of the Region, but also to immerse themselves in beautiful landscapes, typical of the Region of Umbria.

Cammino dei Borghi Silenti

Length: 90 km
Stages: 5
Departure: Tenaglie
Arrival: Tenaglie

The Cammino dei Borghi Silenti is a 90-kilometer circular route that takes in one of the most evocative and authentic corners of Umbria. Born in 2020, this young Cammino has already won the appreciation of many walkers for its beauty and authenticity.

The route, divided into 5 STAGES, winds like an embrace around the Amerini Mountains in southwestern Umbria. It passes through virtually untouched, sparsely inhabited medieval villages where history, nature and traditions come together in a magical, silent atmosphere.

The Cammino dei Borghi Silenti offers a journey back in time, away from the most crowded tourist circuits, where silence reigns supreme and the slow pace of the Camino becomes refreshment for body and soul. It is a unique opportunity to discover the hidden beauty of this Region.
