Via dei Brentatori
A 50-kilometer itinerary along the path taken by the Brentatori. A journey to discover the hills of Bologna among nature, art and history.
From Piazza Maggiore to the Bazzano Fortress, a journey through nature and history awaits you, following the ancient traces of the Brentatori. The route covers a total of about 50 kilometers, taking you to explore five municipalities in the Bologna area: Bologna, Casalecchio di Reno, Monte San Pietro, Zola Predosa and Valsamoggia.
This beautiful route through the hills of Bologna, comes to life in the summer of 2024 from a project of It Only Happens in Bologna in collaboration with local municipalities, and invites you to rediscover the ancient trade guild that left a significant mark on local history.
The journey connects the bustling center of Bologna to the historic Rocca dei Bentivoglio in Bazzano, creating a fascinating link between the past and present of the Compagnia dell'Arte dei Brentatori. The departure and arrival are significant: the first headquarters of the guild was on Via de' Pignattari, next to the Basilica of San Petronio, while today the Rocca di Bazzano represents the new hub of the association, with its current headquarters in Valsamoggia.
Originally, the Via dei Brentatori was a path intended to transport wine between Zola Predosa and Monteveglio. In this revamped version, the route has expanded to include the territories of Bologna and Casalecchio di Reno, thanks to the collaboration with the Bologna Section of CAI.

HISTORY
The Via dei Brentatori has its roots in the distant past, just like the trade guild from which it takes its name. To better understand this path, it is essential to know who the Brentators were and why they had their own dedicated street.
The Brentatori formed a guild, the Company of the Art of Brentatori, which came into existence in 1250 and was officially recognized in 1407. Their main job was to transport wine in a vessel called a “brenta,” which they carried on their shoulders. But they were not limited to this: they were also expert wine tasters, able to assess the quality of wine. They also had a useful role for the community, because the brente could be used to carry water in case of fires. Thus, when the alarm went off, the Brentatori would run to put out the flames, with the water-filled crente on their shoulders.
The Compagnia dell’Arte dei Brentatori, like many guilds, was suppressed in 1800 during the Napoleonic era, but revived in 1970, establishing itself in the Rocca dei Bentivoglio in Bazzano and reconnecting with its original ideals.
These historic carriers had a dedicated route that brought wine from the surrounding lands to Bologna. However, in the 13th century, the route was often unsafe due to raids by Modenese troops. Thus, the City of Bologna decided to create a new route along the hills to ensure safer transportation of wine from Monteveglio, Oliveto and Zappolino. Thus was born Via dei Brentatori, which over time became an integral part of the local road system, connecting Monteveglio to Zola Predosa along the hills of Bologna.
Today, the Brentatori Art Company continues to enhance wine and territory, celebrating the tradition and history of places and people. This path remains a thread of friendship and connection between distant cultures, as evidenced by the delegations opened by the Brentatori in Switzerland, Finland and Oregon.
